John Berrill

John Berrill

Former partner Maurice Blackburn, partner Berrill and Watson, Superannuation

insurance lawyer guru

When John Berrill decided to leave Maurice Blackburn after 29 years, having

been the head of the largest plaintiff superannuation/insurance practice in Australia

some might have expected John to take time off and spend quality time with his wife

of many years. But after a few short weeks she was having none of it.

Six years later John is a partner in the thriving boutique national law firm

Berrill and Watson which he started with Paul Watson and has offices in

Melbourne, Gippsland and Brisbane and helps clients all over the country.

The firm specialises in insurance and superannuation claims and only

represents insured people, never insurance companies.

His drive, his voluntary work on numerous boards and committees in the

community sector and his passion for helping consumers have seen him

become one of the most influential consumer advocates in financial services

in the country.

John talks about:

 What it takes to have a very successful career in the private sector whilst also

advocating for consumers in superannuation and insurance;

 How he has built his networks;

 Why Bill Shorten launched his latest venture Berrill and Watson;

 His mum’s influence in pursuing a career in law and later superannuation

insurance complaint and not a career in history;

 What Jeff Kennett had to do with changing from personal injuries claims to

insurance claims;

 How helping his clients had a life changing effect on his clients;

 His first Total and permanent disability claim in the early 1990’s;

 Why he left Maurice Blackburn and how he has built with his partner a very

successful small national firm focused on insurance claims in superannuation;

and

 His love of Iceland

Amongst a plethora of other stories.

My thanks to John
