Tracey Kariwo is a young lawyer who has been in Australian since 2008
having migrated from Zimbabwe. She is a project analyst at KPMG She
started her legal career as a legal compliance office and on completing her
practical legal training took on a role as immigration lawyer.
Joining me to interview Tracey is a ex colleague of mine Tinashe Makamure
who told me Tracy would be great to interview. Given that they recently got
engaged I should certainly hope that he thought highly of Tracey. Of course
Tinashe did not disappoint.
Tracey talks about:
The difficulties of fitting into law school where the majority of students
were ethnically white;
The finer points of negotiating a bride price;
One good thing Robert Mugabe (former president Zimbabwe) did
achieve;
What the “black tax” is amongst the Zimbabwean community;
The power of networking and belonging to a religious community
Her first legal mentor and how he encouraged her to complete her
practical legal training;
Common issues encountered with helping companies bring in workers
to Australia;
Where the majority of migrant workers come from;
What individuals can do on a practical basis if they want to help a
refugee;
What is a global mobility consultant and how do you get a job like that;
Starting a business as a global mobility consultancy for students
