Privacy Advocate, credit lawyer, presenter and consultant
Kat is a practising lawyer with over 23 years’ experience with 17 years as a
community lawyer and tireless consumer advocate in the area of credit, debt,
insurance, privacy and credit reporting,
She was for many years the principal lawyer at Financial Rights Legal Centre a
strident advocate of the consumers she represented willing to call out anyone who
she thought was trying to rip off the vulnerable in the community.
Besides her role as a fearless advocate, she has authored numerous policy
submissions to government, appeared before senate inquiries and royal
commissions, delivered hundreds of community legal education sessions and of
course spoken to many journalists about what industry and government need to do to
improve outcomes for consumers in the financial services area.
Kat talks about:
Why she gave up her first love of philosophy to become a lawyer:
How working for a bank gave her unique insights when she started working
as a consumer lawyer;
Why an analogy to Indiana Jones is appropriate when discussing the
influence on consumer policy and law reform by consumer advocates;
Why she uses the moniker Luke Skywalker to help protect her privacy; and
Why larger organisations even consumer organisations struggle to assist the
truly vulnerable in the community.
